THE FUTURE OF CLACKAMAS COUNTY
. . . IS BRIGHT IF WE DO IT RIGHT
The voter's support last November to change the Commission to non-partisan and add two new positions is a very positive development for Clackamas County. It is our best opportunity for a Commission that can respond effectively to the needs of the County and its citizens --- without getting mired in partisan politics.
WHAT'S BEFORE US:
Growth Management will be critical in the next two years as we decide where and how the County should grow. We can only save our valuable productive farmland if we also make sure our cities are economically vital and livable. Prioritizing infrastructure - sewer, water, and roads - for urban and urbanizing areas needs to be done ahead of development.
Transportation Issues will greatly influence how we grow. Merely chasing congestion only creates bigger problems down the road. Efficient movement of freight has to be a priority. So does providing multiple alternatives for motorists and other travelers.
Natural Resources are nothing less than spectacular in the Mt. Hood Territory and all of Clackamas County. Not only do we have an obligation to protect them, but many high wage industries seek them out.
Clean air and water are always a priority.
Economic Vitality means building on our region's tremendous assets to attract and retain businesses that value our quality of life and provide family wage jobs.
The Agricultural Industry deserves our support to assure its stability as a billion dollar a year industry in the county -- the second highest in Oregon.
Also important to our future are the issues of affordable housing, building and staffing a new county jail, and the need for mental health services. If the voters choose a new direction for libraries and county extension, how do we make sure the transition is smooth?
The regional spotlight has shifted to Clackamas County. We have rarely had as great an opportunity as now to make a difference for the future of our county. It's our time to shine!
